Badass and Kickass - March 2014

Feeling badass yesterday. Waiting for the train to take me into the Shibuya studio to rehearse my newest song "Pussy Riot". Got Mr Kickass Daniel Karras onside again on drums and Jakey is recording us some demos next week.

I've been following the story of Pussy Riot with a lot of enthusiasm ever since I read about their controversial "Punk Prayer" performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior Feb 2012. The ensuing media three-ring circus was just incredible. The BBC put together a very good documentary about the three girls at the centre of the storm, their backgrounds, ideologies and relationships with their fathers. Nadia, Masha and Katya weren't your average "good girls" and it seemed to be their destiny to shake things up in the uber conservative landscape of modern day Russia.

Around that time, the USA gave the world the infinitely intelligent ramblings of one Member of Congress Rep. Todd Akin. Akin claimed that women who are victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. WHO was this schmuck and what gives him the god-given right to claim such utter BULLSHIT!?

So, I did what every self-respecting singer/songwriter does. I wrote a scathing protest song. My only regret is that it hasn't been released sooner. However the Pussy Riot movement lives on. Pussy Riot were in the news recently during the Sochi Olympics when they were attacked by Cossaks while attempting to record a video for their new song "Putin will teach you to love the Motherland". The police were there but stood idly by. Spineless goons.

"Anybody can be a member of Pussy Riot" says the leader Nadia, "you just need to be passionate about politics, make up a song, record the song, find a place, put on a mask and perform".

Dammit that's what I'm gonna do. Badass is Kickass.

The WOMEN of the world will teach you how to love the MOTHERland fuckers. Enough of the misogyny for fuck's sake. Be a MAN and not a CHILD.

Looking forward to the Amnesty International event on March 20th "Rock for Women's Rights" at What the Dickens (don't you love the irony lol) I'll be on the piano for that one.
